TUCOWS - Hover - OpenSRS
TUCOWS sells domain names via ther HOVER website, and allows resellers to use there system through OpenSRS
Hover
Hover is TUCOWS "direct to consumer" service, the service is not easily understandable to me, specifically i do not understand the hover (Links on your domain that you can manage) is, why would i want to make a website that reads Hover all over it and has links to other websites ?
To me what i make of it is as follows, there brilliant idea is to have them put links on your website called hovers, you get 5 hovers (Links), and when you click them it takes you to http://www.imdb.com/ or http://www.theweathernetwork.com/ (The default 2 links), let us skip that for a few minues and see what you do get and what you do not get (That most other registrars do give you).
1- The plain domain with Web Forwarding, No email, and DNS, and whois privacy $15
2- You do get webmail if you pay $10 extra, and you can use POP3 and IMAP if you pay an extra $45 and for an extra $57 you get 6 of the mailboxes.
The service sold at Hover.com sounds very expensive especially when compared to all the other free things other registrars are giving away for free with every domain name.
OpenSRS
Open SRS is TUCOWS reseller service, the service comes in 3 flavors, TurnKey, Reseller Web Interface, and API, the advantages of OpenSRS reseller system are
1- the first is the "One-Time" fee rather than the yearly fee WildWestDomains has, but then again, WildWestDomains bundles a big pile of essential services and tools with there reseller account that have a real value of much more than the reseller fee.
2- You get an API capable system AND a turnkey storefront in one go, There is no distinction between API and Rebrandable storefront.
3- API uses POST over HTTPS, WildWest uses SOAP over HTTPS, SOAP is newer and better (Since the WSDL instructs the system), but not all languages support it (Limited support in PHP5), Full support in Windows server 2008 OS APIs (Also Windows 7), and great support in .NET 2.0+
4- The fourth advantage would be for PERL programmers who requier an API, OpenSRS gives a "PERL-based reference client library" with every reseller account, i have not personally had a chance to look at it.
